Literacy for Life! New initiative to help 771 million adults who can’t read

Last night, UNESCO’s Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura launched the Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE), which is designed to accelerate literacy efforts in the 34 countries that are home to 85% of the world’s illiterates. Literacy is one of UNESCO’s three priority areas for the 2006-2007 biennium. The other two are Teacher Training and HIV/AIDS Prevention Education.




QUEST- Quality Education for Social Transformation

QUEST’s overall goal is to improve the performance of children in primary schools in Africa, paying specific attention to barriers facing girls. Its focus is on the learning, practice, and mastery of literacy at primary school by poor children in rural areas.

This work complements DFID’s Practice Paper Social Transfers and Chronic Poverty (2005). It also forms one part of DFID’s Scaling up Services team’s workstream on promoting equitable access to health and education services.

Youth Peer Education Toolkit

The Youth Peer Education Toolkit is a group of resources designed to help program managers and master trainers of peer educators. Collectively, these tools should help develop and maintain more effective peer education programs. The five parts of the toolkit are based on research and evidence from the field as well as local examples and experiences. They are designed to be adapted locally as needed. The toolkit resulted from a collaboration between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Family Health International. It was produced for the Youth Peer Education Network (Y-PEER), a project coordinated by UNFPA.
